The Kitty Boss

Realistic dental care for your cat

Listen Later

Start with a healthy, comfortable mouth. Having a sensitive, sore mouth brushed can be a painful experience! Choose the proper toothbrush and toothpaste. Cats need a special toothbrush that fits the shape of their mouth. Toothpastes developed specially for cats are available. Introduce the toothpaste and toothbrush. Create appeal for the flavor of the toothpaste and acceptance for the feel of the brush. Repeat and reward. Cats are good at forming habits and respond well to a consistent routine. Use reassurance and rewards, never reprimands. Brush the front teeth. Point the bristles up while brushing the upper teeth. Point the bristles down while brushing the lower teeth. Brush all of the teeth. When you brush the back teeth, you often have to rely on sound and feel to know when the brush is in contact with the teeth as the back teeth are difficult to see. Schedule regular check ups with your veterinarian. Your cat should have a complete physical examination, which includes a dental check up, every 6 to 12 months.
