Reared for Community, not Conformity (Hebrews 12:1-13)

Listen Later

One of the more tragic ways we misunderstand the Divine is in projecting our experience of harmful parents onto Them. Creator thus becomes the parent that beats us "out of love", parents us through punishment, and more. It leads to profound attachment insecurity, horrible parenting skills, and tasteless relationships to suffering.

Translators have had a hand in this: translating "discipline" instead of childrearing," "punishes" instead of "corrects," and more. Making better sense of the text then hides in a jungle of mealy-mouthed religious phrases ("shared in his holiness") that at best are confusing, but more alarmingly can reinforce a hierarchal, purity, punishment religion.

Let's try it another way.
