We recently ran a national survey at Electrician Australia, and the results gave us a clear picture of two very different motivations — depending on your age, life stage, and whether you’re single or have a family. 

Let’s start with the 18 to 35-year-olds. For this group, the move is about more than just a job. It’s about freedom. Lifestyle. That feeling of doing something big and bold while you still can. Australia offers something the UK simply can’t right now: an adventurous life. A warmer climate. Better pay. And opportunities that feel wide open, not locked behind closed doors. 

Again and again, respondents told us that in the UK, they felt stuck. Like progress depended more on who you know than how good you are. They talked about feeling invisible — working hard, doing everything right, but hitting a ceiling. In contrast, Australia is seen as a place where merit still counts. Where opportunity isn’t gatekept. 

But once we looked at responses from electricians over 35 — or anyone with a partner and kids — the reasons shift dramatically. This group isn’t looking for adventure. They’re looking for stability. And overwhelmingly, the number one reason they’re choosing to move is safety. Not just safety in the workplace — though that matters — but safety for their family. Calm neighbourhoods. Clean parks. 

Good schools. And the feeling that your children can grow up in a place that still values community, time outdoors, and freedom to roam. One father told us: “In the UK, I’m constantly looking over my shoulder — for my kids, for my wife. The pressure’s always there. In Australia, we finally exhaled.” 

And he’s not alone. Families across the board cited similar reasons: better schools, a healthier pace of life, and the ability to actually spend time together — not just pass each other in the hallway between shifts and school runs. They talked about walking their kids to school without worrying. Letting them play outside until dark. Being able to afford a home with a garden, not a cramped flat on a noisy street. And here’s the kicker — in many cases, they’re not taking a pay cut to get that life. In fact, they’re earning more.
