A shy and naive young woman, working as a companion to a wealthy American woman in Monte Carlo, unexpectedly meets and falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a brooding English widower. After a brief courtship, Maxim proposes marriage, and she becomes the new Mrs. de Winter.
