Making All Things New: The Book of Genesis
Rebellion and Ruin
Rev. Ho-Ming Tsui
Scripture: Genesis 3
If God created a flawless world and placed us into this world, what happened? What went wrong?
Some important questions as we start…
• Who is the serpent?
• What is the serpent’s goal?
• What exactly did Adam and Eve do, and what were the consequences?
• Did God create evil?
• Why do we feel something is wrong within ourselves and in the world around us?
———
1. It tells us what why the world is the way it is (v. 1-12)
———
2. It helps us understand our experiences (v. 14-24)
The effects of the fall: “The Curse”:
• The Serpent was cursed to crawl around on its belly and placed in a hostile relationship against the offspring of the woman
• Eve was cursed through pain in childbearing and strife with Adam
• Adam was cursed with frustration in working the ground
• Creation was cursed to produce thorns and thistles
A. Loneliness (in our relationships)
B. Frustration (in our work)
———
3. It hints at God’s eventual plan to restore and renew all things, including us (v. 15, 21, 24)
A. We see the parental love of God in the garden: He walked with them; inquired of them; and clothed them
B. We see the first indication of God’s salvation plan unfolding: “protoevangelium” (ie. the first gospel)
