Dan was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in Western Canada, and as he grew up, he struggled to come to terms with being gay in such a high control environment. Eventually, friendships with outsiders and education from secular sources led to his departure from the strict rule-based lifestyle of JWs into freedom of thought, many years later waking up to the reality of the organization's worst secrets. Despite still keeping his family at arms length and debating the nuances of opening up fully to them, he has come out the other side with a positive viewpoint on life, and hopes that others in similar situations can benefit from this experience.
