KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Mindset allows you to control all of your thoughts and the direction of your actions. Because it’s something I’m so practised in I had nothing else to think about which is why I looked so calm. All the questions that could come into my mind at the point of jumping off the boat, like am I warm enough, is it going to be cold, they didn’t even enter my mind.
  • The first hour went really quickly, but there were moments I didn’t feel like I was going anywhere. Towards the end of the hour my shoulder started to suggest that it might be something more than just a scratch. I couldn’t see much of the boat, especially for the first four hours in the dark, because half your face is always in the water and half the time you’re facing the other way.
  • After 4 or 5 hours of swimming alone and facing my own demons and challenges on m y own. Then you jumped in and because we’d swum together in training all of a sudden I left the timing and speed up to you, I was released of a burden. We breathe on opposite sides so we were looking at each other while we were breathing and smiling at each other. But once you got back on the boat after your stint, you got in your chair, had a cup of coffee and a biscuit and under layers with a hat on and you fell asleep. I thought: You bastard, how could you do that to me?!
  • I didn’t feel cold at any stage until I lost the use of one arm. I wasn’t going to let anything stop me from making that swim, but I got to a point where my arm just wouldn’t rotate and I then started going 25% of my speed and I began to cool down and get cold. The crew ran to the side of the boat, which was a concern because they don’t do that for no reason. We had 6 miles left and they said it would take about 6 hours, but with the tide changing, 9 and adding another couple because of the speed I was going. I could have been my old, immature, brash, childish self and carry on but at this stage it was obvious that I was going to encounter symptoms of hyperthermia within 6 hours, it didn’t matter how strong or determined I was, the body wasn’t going to be able to fight that off and I didn’t want to put anyone else at risk. I was very proud to make the mature decision to retire due to injury and live to fight another day.

BEST MOMENTS
‘My mindset was: Get in. Start Swimming. Don’t stop ‘til I hit land.’
‘When the idea came up about the depth below me I thought, that’s a fascinating idea, it’s quite childish, let’s grow up, and I pushed the thought to one side and didn’t think about it again.’
‘Success at the highest level of professionalism is so acute, you can change it by a millimetre and lose or you can change it by a millimetre and succeed.’
‘The day was a success, I don’t really have any regret, frustration or resentment. The only thing I’ve got is the burning desire to build bigger, better, stronger to successfully, in a single attempt make it to the beach in  France.’

ABOUT THE HOST
Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.
Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.
Why?
Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!
How?
Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
