I felt pretty inspired to do this episode as my home game is currently going through an AD&D 2e campaign (Vecna Lives!). This is also the edition that I was introduced to D&D with - the original release of the 2e PHB, with that gorgeous Jeff Easley artwork. It set my childhood imagination on fire! It was a lot of fun coming back with the mindset of how a new person might approach the game and how they might look at this. I always apply the rule of not using any aids in creating a character other than what would have been available to someone at the time of its release - so in this case, no using the internet! This one really brought me back, but also made me realize how much clearer the character creation process was in this edition compared to the prior editions. Better late than never! Although the 25th anniversary of the PS2 came and went at the end of October this year, I wanted to make sure that I dedicated an episode talking about this monumental platform and how it transformed the industry. This console is the reason that video games have become the dominant form of entertainment in the mainstream. It started the trend of your video game console being an all in one multimedia player, since the PS2 doubled as a DVD player. Some legendary franchises got their start on the PlayStation 2 platform and the industry saw the rise of many prominent developers today like Naughty Dog and Insomniac. This was a focal point in the history of the video game industry, and its impact is still felt today. I recently came across an article online that was quite critical about some of the older and forgotten rules from D&D's history. This drew my attention and after reading through it, I was inspired to revisit the topic of reviewing lost rules of D&D. This week I am going over that article's list of 10 rules from prior editions that the author states, he is happy are gone. While some of them I can understand, many of them I do not agree with at all! Tune in to hear which ones I would love to maintain in the modern day, which rules concepts the article gets wrong overall, and lastly, what one rule I had completely forgotten about, but has now inspired me to bring it back into my own home game immediately!

Last week's surprise announcement of Steam Machine has sent the video game community into a spin. Although not really all that surprising when you really consider it, nonetheless, it was still the kind of news that creates buzz and has to make the major console platform holders feel a bit antsy (especially Microsoft). This week I wanted to give my thoughts on the Steam hardware that was announced, with a particular focus on the Steam Machine. We are witnessing history in the making with this announcement, but how impactful it will be remains to be seen. Will this be like back in 2015 where it sputtered out from day 1? Or will it be more like the Steam Deck, and find success? Everyone seems to have their own opinion on this topic, and so do I! With the new Forgotten Realms books that came out recently (and that ones that I did my first impressions of in last week's episode), came the promised downloadable digital extra content promised to those who had pre-ordered a digital bundle (or otherwise available for those willing to spend $15 a pop). This week I give my impression on the first 2 of these digital extras, and then give my opinion on this growing trend that is showing up in the TTRPG world - the idea of micro transactions and DLC content. As was stated last year by WotC - they feel D&D is under monetized and have been moving to discover or "unlock" the recurrent spending seen in the video game world. Tune in to hear me dive in to give my thoughts on this trend, share my critiques of it and my concerns on how it impacts the end product.

This episode is going live on November 11, 2025. I thought this was the best time to do an episode in honour of Remembrance Day. There was a time where talking about war video games would have been considered disrespectful (primarily back during the SNES days or earlier). Video games have come along way since then and we have since had many serious and mature looks at war. Not just World War II (or WWI), but also modern conflicts that have appeared in the real world headlines. I go over a few different lists of war games that have a good reputation, or ones that I have had experience with that treat the subject from a more mature angle. Both Heroes of Faerûn and Adventures in Faerûn have been released, and together they comprise the newest iteration of the Wizards of the Coast campaign setting presentation. This is a bit of a change back towards a more traditional approach after experimenting with alternate methods since the initial launch of 5e in 2014. I spent the past week digging in and was surprised at some of the stuff I found here. Tune in to find out if this new approach to campaign settings appeals to you, particularly if you are a pre-existing fan of the Forgotten Realms.

It has been a while since Sonic the Hedgehog has been an opponent for Mario. Ever since Sega withdrew from hardware and transformed into a publisher, Sonic and Mario became friends. Sure we had them competing in the same games like Sonic and Mario at the Olympics or Sonic being a guest character in Super Smash Bros, but this is the first time in a long time that Sonic has taken Mario head on in a competing title. Somewhat reminiscent of the SNES/Genesis console wars, Sega even resurrected an old TV spot from those days to advertise this match up! I felt it was time to officially put them head to head in this newest entry in the Versus Mode series. Tune in to hear which one ultimately finishes in first place.

Halloween is now here, so I am finally going to do the spotlight on Call of Cthulhu I have long wanted to do! While Call of Cthulhu can be played at any time of year, it is particularly suitable at Halloween. There are plenty types of horror TTRPGs out there, but none quite so effective at the genre as this game. Based on the legendary works of HP Lovecraft, this is probably one of the most well known and respected TTRPGs that isn't related to D&D. If you are looking to play a game that will provide a good spooky time for your group, then this really is the best option. Tune in to take a bit of a dive into the system and hear some of the scenarios I recommend at the end.

Halloween is here once again, and it is time for another spooky themed episode. What better way than to talk about the next entry in my top 100 video games of all time list: the original Silent Hill. This Playstation game had a profound impact on the gaming industry and on me as a gamer. I initially wrote this game off as a cheap Resident Evil clone, and it wasn't until a friend showed it to me that I understood what this game truly was. This game went on to launch a franchise that still exists to this day, and this first entry is about to be remade in the near-ish future. Before that new version arrives however, I wanted to talk about my experience with the original version, and why it impacted me so much. Tune in to hear how this old PS1 era game can still give you the creeps despite the technical limitations.
