In which the young American Wellingborough takes a leisurely and contemplative Sunday ramble through the verdant English countryside, encountering quaint villagers and experiencing both the charm and the quaint austerities of rural life, before an unexpected and warm invitation leads him to an encounter with three delightful young ladies. In which he subsequently makes the acquaintance of the genteelly reckless Harry Bolton, a prodigal youth of noble bearing and uncertain intentions, whose company introduces the Yankee to the bustling life and stratagems of Liverpool’s docks, culminating in a sudden and secretive journey to the grandeur of London’s West End.
