Why would anyone walk deliberately toward people who'd just tried to kill him? That's the strange choice Jesus makes in John 11:7-16, heading back toward Jerusalem after escaping arrest and execution, because his friend Lazarus has died.

This short passage raises a question worth reflection: what actually grounds my confidence that will hold up under real pressure?

Even as the disciples make bold declarations, they collapse under the weight of trying circumstances.Bold words aren't worthless, but they're the wrong foundation entirely. Something—or rather someone—has to hold when conviction doesn't.

Everyone eventually asks this question: if God is good, why do the people he loves still suffer? John 11:1-6 walks through the opening of one of the most searching stories in the Gospel of John: the illness of a man named Lazarus, whose sisters send an urgent message to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick."

Jesus's response? Delay. He waits for two more days: he waits for death.

That delay isn't neglect. Listen in as we trace how Jesus's love and Jesus's timing aren't in conflict, even when they look like it from the outside. Suffering, in this account, isn't evidence that God has looked away but how his purposes are being worked out.

A common critique of Christianity is that it's all talk: people who attend church, nod along, and live no differently than anyone else. James 1:22–25 makes the same critique.

Merely agreeing with good teaching, even religious teaching, changes nothing if it doesn't change you. It's like looking in a mirror and instantly forgetting what you look like. But James isn't arguing that good behavior earns anyone favor with God. Real transformation comes from somewhere outside ourselves: from God's own work, described elsewhere in the Bible as writing his law on a person's heart.

And if God does his work in you, it will produce lasting change: willpower cannot manufacture that, only God can.

What happens when someone finally reads something that exposes what's wrong in their life? In 2 Kings 22:8-20, a young king named Josiah discovers a long-lost copy of God's law buried in his own temple, and when he hears it read aloud, he doesn't shrug it off. He tears his clothes, seeks answers, and takes it seriously enough to change course entirely.

That response is what the Bible calls repentance, grief over what's wrong followed by a genuine turn toward God. It's not about feeling guilty for guilt's sake. It's about recognizing that the God who made you actually has something to say about how you live, and that ignoring it doesn't make it less true.

Josiah was a good king, but even he pointed beyond himself to someone greater: Jesus, who doesn't just deliver a message from God, but is God's message in person. The same question this ancient king faced still stands: when truth confronts you, will you dismiss it or respond?

Every soul is known to God before a word is even on the tongue. In Luke 8:4-18, we trace Jesus's teaching that nothing hidden will remain so not our thoughts, our motives, nor the true state of our hearts before him. This is a truth meant to strip away every pretense of self-sufficiency and drive us to the only remedy: Christ.

Jesus's command, "take care then how you hear," presses the point: how we receive God's word reveals whether the Spirit has done his effectual work within us. Fruitfulness compounds; fruitlessness compounds and neither is finally hidden from God or man.

For believers, this is a summons to repent of careless hearing and cultivate Spirit-wrought attentiveness at home and in worship.

For the unconverted, the good news remains: God did not leave mankind to perish in sin and misery, but of his mere good pleasure has provided a Redeemer. The call is not to try harder, but to confess and believe, trusting wholly in him who alone gives ears to hear.

Why do people hear the exact same sermon and respond in completely different ways: one moved to lasting change, another unaffected?

Jesus' Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15) opens a short study on what it actually means to receive God's word. The answer: hearing is not the same as hearing.

Working through all four soils—the hardened path, the shallow rock, the choked thorns, and the fruitful ground—we look honestly at counterfeit responses (Felix in Acts 24, Herod in Mark 6) alongside the real thing. Along the way we address the question underneath the question: why does the gospel take root in some hearts and not others? Scripture's answer is sobering and freeing at once: understanding is a gift of grace, not a personal achievement, though our response still matters.

Whether you're examining your own fruitfulness, praying for your family's hearts, or wondering if your faith is even real, this message calls us to ask what kind of soil we are.

Is it arrogant for Jesus to claim to be the Son of God? His opponents thought so, and they were ready to kill him for it.

But in John 10:31-42, Jesus doesn't simply assert his identity; he defends it. He points to his works: healings, restoration, life given where there was none. He argues from Scripture: if God's own word called human judges "gods" by virtue of their authority, why is it blasphemy for the one God specifically consecrated and sent to claim divine Sonship?

The argument is not circular; it's cumulative. Works that only God could authorize. A life consistently oriented toward the Father's glory. Testimony that preceded him from John the Baptist. And a body of witnesses who, having seen it all up close, concluded: everything John said about this man was true.

Faith in Jesus is not a leap into the dark. It is a reasonable response to compelling testimony. Yet the passage ends with a sobering reminder: the same evidence that compels some leaves others reaching for stones. Which raises the question: what will it take to open your eyes?

Most people assume that religion works like this: you make a choice, you maintain that choice through moral effort, and whether you end up in good standing with God depends largely on your consistency.

Jesus, in John 10:22–30, proposes something far more radical and far more honest about the human condition.

When pressed by hostile crowds to prove his identity, he doesn't offer a political program or a self-help framework. He describes a relationship between God and his people defined entirely by divine initiative: he knows them, he calls them, he gives them eternal life, and he guarantees that nothing in creation can undo what God himself has done.

If you find yourself skeptical of Christianity precisely because it seems to demand more willpower than you possess, this passage may reframe the question entirely. The issue, Jesus says, was never your grip on God.

In John 10:14–21, Jesus identifies himself as the Good Shepherd who knows his sheep with the same intimacy that exists between the Father and the Son. This knowledge is not abstract. It drives him to action: he lays down his life for his sheep.

And the scope of his mission extends beyond the people of Israel. He has other sheep—Gentiles, outsiders, the far-off—whom he must bring. That "must" is not obligation imposed from outside; it is the charge he has received from his Father, carried out in sovereign freedom.

No one takes his life from him. He lays it down and takes it up again by his own authority. The cross and resurrection are not accidents of history. They are the means by which the Good Shepherd gathers one flock from every corner of the earth. His death and resurrection accomplish what no human effort could: a people united under one Shepherd, known by him, and knowing him.

Have you ever been let down by someone who was supposed to protect you? A leader who disappeared when things got hard, a guide who turned out to be in it for themselves?

Jesus speaks directly into that disappointment in John 10:11-13. He describes himself as the Good Shepherd, not a hired hand who cuts and runs when the cost gets too high, but the one who willingly stands between his people and everything that threatens them.

And he didn't just stand there. He died. He absorbed the full weight of sin and God's wrath, and he didn't flinch.

Pastor Dale draws out a truth that is both humbling and freeing: your walk with God is not held together by how faithful you are to him, but by how faithful he was at the cross. The shepherd who didn't flee then is the same shepherd who will not abandon you now. That's not sentiment: that's the gospel.
