Just like when a flight attendant is giving the pre-flight safety instructions…put your oxygen mask on first and then you can help others. Take those important moments to care for and love yourself and then you will be ready to take care of those around you! Remember that being kind, caring and loving yourself are the steps forward to liking and loving who you are. When you enjoy your own company, it’s easy for others to enjoy your company as well.

I encourage you to look and see how you can serve someone else. Maybe you mow someone’s yard, shovel the snow from someone’s walkway, take out and put away someone’s trash cans, make and serve a meal to a family in need. As you already know, this list could go on and on. In whatever way you choose to serve, know that you are helping to make our world a better place. How cool is that!!!

At the very core of “Keep the Faith” it encourages the preservation of hope and conviction when confronted with adversity. For me, it taps into my beliefs, values, and aspirations. It encourages me to persevere when the journey becomes tough. Keeping the faith is like a guiding light for me in those times of uncertainty and doubt. It lights the way for me when I need that confidence to overcome my life’s obstacles.

I encourage everyone to take a few moments to thank those everyday heroes that you encounter each day. It costs you nothing except for a few seconds of time, and it is priceless what you are doing for the person. You are validating them! We all want and need to be validated. As an educator, when I would receive a note, letter, email or verbal compliment from a parent, student, administrator, or other staff member. It was like giving me a million-dollar bonus!!!

For some of us we may view rest as a weakness, when in reality, when we take a “time out” and we rest, we think better, feel better and do better. I am reminded that rest is a way to reward yourself for all the incredible things you do year-round. Be gentle and be good to yourself. The rest you take now will prepare you for the busy days ahead.

This week’s topic is about “hope and faith”.  A great quote that explains it is “hope is the ability to hear the melody of the future. Fatih is the courage to dance to it today.” Unknown. All of us at some point in our lives have hope and faith in finding someone special. That special someone we will love and who will in return love us. I believe it is part of human nature to embrace hope and faith. It is part of our resilience.

As I got older, the term “Good Grief” no longer was a term of exasperation like it was from Charlie Brown. In fact, I began to see it as an oxymoron. At the age of “13” I experienced the first death of a loved one, my great grandmother.  I loved her very much and was extremely upset when she passed away. My parents did a wonderful job, talking with me about death, the love and loss I was feeling, and it was ok to be sad. As the years passed by, I continued to experience grief from the loss of more loved ones but also learned that there was also grief from the loss of relationships, the loss of pets, the ending of one stage of my life into another.  Through all these types of grief however, I never once would have used the term “Good Grief”! For me there didn’t seem to be anything “good” about it!

Here’s to new beginnings! Many of you might be thinking “what is she talking about?”  I want you to know and be ready to step into a new chapter of life and when that time comes know it’s ok to embrace the promise of new beginnings. Many of us see the start of a new year as an opportunity to reset, refresh and renew us mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. However, due to unforeseen circumstances in our lives or changes that happen that we choose, this is also a new beginning.  When we need to embark on this new journey, let’s do it with optimism and enthusiasm.
