  • A substantial proportion of these admissions are rated by clinicians as potentially avoidable or unnecessary.
  • Thus, Medicare is spending hundreds of millions of dollars for these hospitalizations the often result in hospital-related complications and morbidity.
  • Several strategies and tools are available that may be effective in reducing these hospitalizations and related complications and costs.
  • Financial incentives in the Medicare fee-for-service system often incentivize these hospitalizations, whereas Medicare Advantage and other value-based programs try to reduce them
