The Art Of Entrepreneurship

References & reviews: How to discuss subpar work

Listen Later

This episode’s topic comes from a listener-submitted question about a tough position that leaders will eventually find themselves in. What do you do when you’re asked to give a professional reference for someone whose work was less than awesome?

The listener specifically asked about what to do when you’re in a tight community and want to support another small business. It’s hard: we all want to support small businesses, but if you refer someone in or a company starts working with a vendor because the vendor is using your name, and it doesn’t go well, that reflects on you.

So what do you do? I discuss how I’ve navigated the situation and tips that will help you provide references honestly and professionally.
