Sally Douglas reflection at Richmond Uniting Church, Sunday 30 June 2019.
Around Australia debates have raged this week about Christianity, free speech, the LGBTQI community and what the bible says. Huge amounts of hate, anger, hurt and misrepresentations of the bible have been spawned by these debates.
This Sunday, one of the readings in the lectionary (the weekly list of bible readings set out for worship in the world wide church) was the passage in Galatians 5 that Israel Folau (mis)quoted from.
In worship at Richmond Uniting on Sunday 30th June we explored this reading deeply – its context in the first century and the potential implications of taking the bible seriously today.
