On this recording we hear from Dean Hildebrandt, who leads the Assurex Global group of large regional brokers. Collectively Assurex comprises 25,000 employees in 700 offices at 100 partner firms around the world, generating $40 billion in premiums. The firms are privately held and compete with the big boys: Marsh, Aon, Willis and Gallagher. Assurex provides advantages to partners: combined insurance programs for clients in various places around the world; peer-to-peer learning (e.g. COOs of the individual firms discussing common issues); and data insights in the combined premiums generated. Dean outlines the partner’s challenges on a number of marketplace and operational issues. He shares insight on how partners are managing large staffs: “Some say, ‘We’ll be the most flexible firm there is and we want to help people achieve whatever work/life balance they want.’ Other firms say, ‘We are an apprenticeship business for learning and collaboration and we want 100% of our people in physical offices.’”
