Have you ever heard of the phrase: “regulate your nervous system” well we typically see and hear this message everywhere especially on social media but what does it actually mean to “regulate your nervous system?”
What is the nervous system? The million-dollar question! Don’t fret I got you. “The nervous system is a complex network that includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves throughout the body. It governs everything from our physical sensations to emotional responses.” There are two important systems of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS):
· Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): The “fight-or-flight” system that activates in response to stress or danger.
· Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): The “rest-and-digest” system that helps the body relax, recover, and conserve energy.
So, what is a dysregulated nervous system state? There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the nervous system. We breakdown 10 regulation tools for implementation that have helped me over the years as a religious cult survivor with C-PTSD (complex trauma) and other mental health conditions (ADHD but most likely AuDHD, unspecified mood disorder provisionally borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder etc.):
If there is one thing you take away from today’s podcast episode it is to listen to your body. Don’t let it get to the point where you are sick. Don’t let it get to the point where you are in the hospital. Don’t let it get to the point where you lose everything and build out of burnout. That shit is hard to do forreal. Trust I’ve been there done that. While it’s not impossible to recover from burnout it takes years to find some sense of normalcy and then a lifetime of healing. Don’t wait for permission to heal, rest, create, and laugh because life is a gift. It is a joy to be here.
In the wise words of Debra Silverman “If only you understood that your mind must stop, your nervous system must relax, and then you get to come home.” I read this and wept. Tears and tears. Okay, but it is what it is. Be yourself. Love yourself. Take care of yourself. If your nervous system has been dysregulated for years, you are not alone. I feel you; I hear you and I see you. Take baby steps* and implement the tools you learned today and of course from trusted licensed professionals. I am not a licensed professional, but I’ve been in therapy for years and learned a lot on my journey back home to self.
