Rehabilitating From Mental Disability With Sara-Anne

Listen Later

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by sales and marketing trainer Sarah-Anne who was previously declared mentally disabled and told she would need to live on a disability pension because she wouldn’t be able to work a normal 9-5. Ten years later, she’s running her own company, making good money and doesn’t take any medication or live off a disability pension.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I was on really heavy anti-psychotics, antidepressants, anti-migraine medications, the antipsychotics were the hardest ones to get off because I couldn’t sleep if I didn’t take them, so I took them for ten years. I watched so many videos and tutorials about how to get off them and the doctors were saying they were harder to get off than heroin, but I didn’t want to be on them for the rest of my life because I didn’t know what they’d end up doing to my body or even if I was really getting any decent natural sleep when I was sedating myself all the time.
  • I wasn’t harming myself, I was diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorder (experiencing intense emotions, different ones all at once) which characterised in really massive mood swings and huge emotional breakdowns which would result in crying, screaming punching and banging my head against walls – not to hurt myself but to make the emotional pain stop. It was an extreme way of me trying to regulate my emotions to level myself out.
  • I still struggle with a bit of histamine intolerance and there are some foods I have to avoid, but a lot of it is just being really disciplined with your diet and taking various supplements, to heal the lining of your gut for example because gut health is directly linked to mental health. This will help me manage my symptoms, have me feeling good and not having any stomach problems or feelings from gut stuff.
  • I started climbing after I’d already healed and recovered after all of the mental issues, but it’s definitely something that helped me to stay healthy, to have a hobby where I cared about the results more than just being healthy because I have to be healthy. It helps me to switch off mentally, it’s like meditation, you can’t think about anything else than what’s in front of you, focussing on your breathing and using all of your strength while trying to be really calm.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I’d always seemed to have sleep issues. As a kid I took a lot of antibiotics for frequent ear infections for months and that was the start of a steady decline downwards of sleeping, mood, other problems, stomach problems, eating disorders and it snowballed to the point where at 18 I was crying and screaming every day and wasn’t sleeping at all and hit rock bottom of feeling mentally unwell.’

‘I was constipated from a young age; I only went to the bathroom every 2-3 days. At 24 I did a 3-day water fast and that helped reset my bowels, my stomach and the bacteria there and in the last 5 years since I’ve done that I go to the bathroom after every meal like you’re meant to.’

‘As soon as you fix the diet all the symptoms will stop. Food triggers it. If you have a gut problem and you’re eating inflammatory foods, it’s these and the proteins in the bloodstream that are causing the problem. If I were to start eating processed foods again now I would get brain fog, snappy and irritable and within a few weeks I’d get emotional and sad and grumpy.’

‘I’m not a foodie, maybe because of everything I’ve been through with food. I cook because it’s healthy. If you’ve been at the gym for 4 hours and you’re starving, everything is delicious.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Sarah Anne is an authentic, caring, and client-centred sales and marketing trainer who helps coaches reach six-figure income by bringing more value to their clients. Sarah shows entrepreneurs how to charge more by either increasing the results, or the speed or ease with which their clients get results. You could go without numbering. ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
