ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church Year. Throughout the year, we have seen how Jesus is a King who is very different from the rest of history’s kings. Christ’s unique reign takes center stage as the Church Year draws to a close. Today’s readings highlight the beautiful and unexpected truth that he reigns as King in the interest of the subjects he rules. In order to defeat our enemies and rescue us from their dominion, our King came to wear a crown of thorns. By doing so, however, he became our righteousness and opened the door for us to enter paradise. Though this Sunday puts Christ’s reign in special focus, it is at work every time he serves his subjects with the gospel as they gather in his name.
