When someone we love is diagnosed with cancer, we want to help. But sometimes we don’t understand what that person actually needs.

In this personal conversation from From the Writer’s Desk, I’m reflecting on Chapter 19 of my book, Still Standing: When the Earth Shatters, and the experiences that led me to write about caregivers, partners, and families.

Having experienced cancer myself and watched my mother navigate her own diagnosis, I’ve learned that love, independence, and support can sometimes be difficult to balance.

I hope this conversation encourages patients and loved ones to understand each other a little better.
