Reject and Resubmit (formerly Desk Reject) episodes

  • All the books, skills and topics you need to avoid
and some you may want to acquire

Another month closer to the end of the year means another month closer to grocery stores putting Christmas decorations on display way too early. But more importantly, it means a new Reject and Resubmit episode!

If you make it through the first 15 minutes without getting offeneded by Alexander's rant, then you will hear us discuss the following topics:

    • should you read (non-fiction) in your free time?
    • What are some unexpectedly useful skills to acquire as an academic?
    • How to deal with hot and cold topics in research?
    • Some things mentioned in the episode:

        • Conferencing like it's 2025
brought to you live and in person from AOM 2025

Today we bring you an episode from the wild, with all the audio issues that are part of a recording in windy Copenhagen. That's right, with only slightly more than a year's delay you have the pleasure of listening to our review of AOM 2025, our first conference together as newly minted Assistant Professors.

          What we will discuss:

          • How have things changed at conferences as an Assistant Professor compared to being a Post Doc or PhD student
          • Why organize, rather than attend, a session at a conference?
          • What is the value of the non-academic portion of conferences?
          • Again, we apologize profusely for the worse-than-usual sound quality and promise to do better in the future.

With significant delay between recording and publishing, we bring you our third episode (or 57th if you are of the old guard) of the "Reject and Resubmit: the Assistant-Prof cast". This time we bring you:

              • our guilty pleasures - where once again Marco makes us look bad
              • whether you should collaborate with local university colleagues?
              • Why we need to write policy and or managerial recommendations
              • How to deal with the constant social uprooting that comes with an academic life
              • In addition: The person who publicly shares the number of times Alexander says "incentives" in this episode will get a shout-out in one of our episodes

                  • Whether and when it may be a good idea to turn your passion into a research project?
                  • Are academics allowed to switch off?

Desk Reject goes Reject & Resubmit

Desk Reject is back with a brand new name, a slightly new concept and even less gender diversity than before!

For the first episodes, the hosts Alexander Staub, Philipp Becker and Marco Leander Rapp will be applying their newfound wisdom as freshly minted Assistant Professors at Esade, Utrecht University and University of Amsterdam to discuss the following topics:

                    • How to appropriately deal with tragedy of co-workers and or students
                    • Whether we are incentivized too much, not enough or just the right amount to produce research that appears surprising
                    • How to handle smalltalk situation in class and at conferences
                    • This episode was recorded remotely from Barcelona, Amsterdam and Utrech.

                    • How to conference - with special guests
Philipp and Alexander share their 4 year conferencing learning and are joined by Imke Reimers, Gordon Burtch and Frank Nagle

'Twas the best of times, 'twas the worst of times - in other words, this Desk Reject episode is another classic AOM on-the-road recording. The bad news off the top: Your 2 favorite hosts weren't able to make it, which is why you are left with Philipp and Alexander reporting from Boston. The good news is, we found some great replacements with Imke Reimers (Associate Professor at Cornell University), Frank Nagle (Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School) and Gordon Burtch (Associate Professor at Boston University) sharing actual valuable input on attending conferences and being a grad student. But let's start with the bad news - Philipp and Alexander have some thoughts after taking part in the conference circuit for over 4 years now. Among other things they will be sharing:

                      • what continues to irk them about AOM in particular and conferences in general
                      • what has become more important over time when attending conferences
                      • what has become less relevant over time when attending conferences
                      • some thoughts on job market interviews at conferences.
                      • And much more.

In case you prefer to skip the hosts' ramblings and receive some actual wisdom, we were so kind as to provide you the chapter markers for the discussion with Imke, Frank and Gordon.

We hope you forgive us for the rough audio in some spots - we tried to do the best with what we had, which is a field recorder and Alexander's shaky hands.

This episode was recorded around Boston at - Harvard Square, Harvard Business School, Tatte Bakery and the Hynes Convention Center.

About Reject and Resubmit (formerly Desk Reject)

                              From the publisher's feed

In the podcast "Reject and Resubmit: The Assist.Prof Podcast" (formerly Desk Reject: der PhD-Cast"), Alexander, Philipp, and Marco share their experiences as Assistant Professors in Business, Economics and Information Systems at different universities across Europe. The goal is not necessarily to inform, but to offer a candid lens into the joys and struggles of three junior scholars trying to find their way in the jungle of academia. We hope you accompany us on this journey and maybe even learn a thing or two (but don't count on it).
