The KZN Education Department says that the Greytown pupil who was suspended because he refused to shave off his beard would return to school today (Friday), The department intervened and had directed the school to reverse the suspension and allow the learner to return. Earlier this year, a Gauteng private Christian school refused an isiZulu-speaking learner from attending school while wearing a traditional ceremonial goat-skin bracelet called an isiphandla. In a country as diverse as ours, why do we still see such incidents in the media? One would assume that with the kind of history we come from, such incidents won’t occur in our schools.
