Overview: Religion can actively keep people from caring for other people. The bottom line is my personal acceptance, not the good of other people. This is a very difficult propensity to break. We insist that we are the caliber of people God must bless. It drives people away from seeking true salvation. People hate criticism because we think we are so acceptable. Criticism destroys this impression. If a man brings his wife flowers, it is a good thing to do. If she asks why he did it, and he says he bought them because it makes him feel good, she will not appreciate them as much as she would have, had it been about her. Worship that is centred on the worshiper is, similarly, worthless. This kind of -worship- is serious about tradition and personal preference, to the point of being ruthless toward other people. Jesus cuts through all of these and shows the freedom God's people have in Christ. If you don't build your confidence upon the perfect life, death and resurrection of Christ, you are building it on your own righteousness.
