Long term storytelling may be a thing of the past but in 1997 it was on full display. In the midst of the USA vs Canada angle, the WWF crafted a story that would introduce what would wind up being one of the company’s longest running characters. Paul Bearer had a secret and Shawn Michaels had an attitude. The same year he lost his smile he introduced the WWF audience to a new, edgier product. The wrestling landscape was very different in 1996. The Rock was wrestling dark matches as Dwayne Johnson, Steve Austin wasn’t yet Stone Cold and a company other then WWF was on the verge of dominating the wrestling landscape. With more money and a lighter schedule, WCW was able to get the attention of two WWF stars. The addition of Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to WCW still new Monday Nitro program got fans attention but it paled in comparison to the shift that took place at Bash at the Beach.
