Remembering Carl Weathers: 2 Guys and a Chainsaw Discuss Predator

Listen Later

Earlier this year, Two Guys and a Chainsaw hosts Todd and Craig paid tribute to the late actor Carl Weathers by discussing his role in the 1987 action-horror classic, Predator. Carl Weathers, best known for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, died of heart disease in February 2024 at age 76. He was a successful football player before retiring in 1974 to pursue acting full-time.

Todd and Craig discuss Weathers’s charisma and charm, evident in both the Rocky movies and Predator. They note that after Weathers’s death, Sylvester Stallone posted an emotional tribute to him on Instagram. Stallone credited Weathers’s talent and powerful presence with contributing to the success of the Rocky films.

Todd and Craig then shift the conversation to Predator. They discuss the film’s place in the action-horror genre, with Craig comparing it to Friday the 13th with muscular army guys and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the final girl. They mention the film’s impressive sound design, particularly in the Predator’s point-of-view shots.

The hosts also touch on the intense testosterone on set, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura constantly trying to one-up each other in the gym. Carl Weathers, meanwhile, worked out on his own, wanting his co-stars to believe his impressive physique came naturally. Todd and Craig point out that both Schwarzenegger and Ventura would later become governors (of California and Minnesota, respectively)6.

Todd and Craig also discuss the film’s iconic monster design by Stan Winston. They mention the Predator’s Rastafarian-inspired appearance, complete with dreadlock-like tendrils. They also talk about Kevin Peter Hall, the actor who played the Predator, who also played Harry in Harry and the Hendersons. Tragically, Hall died of AIDS in 1991 after contracting the virus through a blood transfusion.

Todd and Craig conclude by discussing their mixed feelings about Predator through the lens of their adult sensibilities, while also acknowledging the film’s nostalgic value. We loved learning about another dearly departed actor through their point of view. After you listen to our roundup discussion, be sure to check out their awesome episode for a full discussion of Predator and a tribute to Carl Weathers.
