On this special tribute episode of Knicks Fan TV, CP “The Fanchise” remembers the life and legacy of Michael Ray “Sugar” Richardson, who passed away at the age of 70 — with two guests who knew his story deeply on and off the court: Chuck D and author Jake Uitti.
We revisit Sugar’s meteoric rise with the Knicks in the late ’70s and early ’80s: a 6'5 do-it-all point guard with flair, charisma, defense, and playmaking that drew comparisons to Magic Johnson. Chuck D paints the picture of New York City’s nightlife and streets at that time — Studio 54, temptations everywhere, and how that same city energy that loved Sugar also helped derail so many athletes and entertainers.
Author Jake Uitti, who co-wrote the memoir
“Banned: How I Squandered an All-Star NBA Career Before Finding My Redemption”
shares intimate stories from working with Michael Ray: his battles with addiction, being banned by David Stern, his decision not to return to the NBA after reinstatement, and how he rebuilt his life as a champion overseas, coach, father, and sober man.
We also cover:
Sugar and Ray Williams as one of the Knicks’ most exciting backcourts
The harsh reality of being a young star dropped into NYC in the late ’70s
How Sugar became a pioneer abroad, helping grow basketball around the world
What redemption meant to him: sobriety, trust, family, and mentoring others
Reflections on the passing and impact of Lenny Wilkens
How today’s Knicks are writing their own long-form story, brick by brick
This episode is for anyone who loves NBA history, Knicks lore, and real-life redemption stories.
