It may be surprising to hear, but material blessing can be a spiritual curse. Yes, this goes against everything we learn as Americans. Granted, poverty can be a curse, too. But Jesus never said, “Blessed are the rich.” He said, “It is more difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.” Now, material prosperity does not automatically lead to a curs. But those of us who are wealthy in material terms need to aware of the danger. This is what Moses warned the Israelites about in Deuteronomy 8. Thankfully, he gives practical instruction about how to retain the blessing and avoid the curse.
