Framing Visual Culture

Ren Hang: Queerness, Asian Bodies and the Politics of the Private | Nicholas Gamso

Listen Later

Back in Pratt Institute in 2017, I would meet with Nick every week at the writing centre to work on my thesis. We had lengthy discussions about Adidas and youth culture, how those three stripes have come to signify youth and "coolness" even when knocked-off. I am honored to be in conversation with him again, this time about artist-photographer Ren Hang -- a different symbol of youth culture. Check out the piece Nick wrote for Asia Art Archive titled "Ren Hang in the Global City."

Topics discussed today:

- Are Ren Hang's works social commentary?

- How do Western audience view or misinterpret his works?

- What does it mean to be a queer body in urban space?

- What is Art after Liberalism?
