Renos Nicos Spanoudes chats to Aubrey Mogase, member of the Mamelodi Arts Centre Culture Forum and Heritage Group and Mamelodi Cosmopolitan Collective, photographer, writer and Author of Mamelodi - Reflections of a Lifetime, whose book is dedicated to all Mamelodi residents and unveils the history of the township outside Pretoria.
In 1956 there were home-brew strikes in protest against the government’s plan to monopolise the production of home-brew, squeezing out the livelihood of informal brewers in the township.
Magase says “This community was very close-knit and the forced removals of the 1940s and 1950s brought a lot of people together from Eersterust, Lady Selborne, Riverside. [Because of the shared trauma], people treated each other as family. They looked after each other’s kids. The community existed as one big family.”

Mogase says, ‘It’s important to tell the stories. Everything old is new. The photographs in the book will show the younger generation how we evolved’.
