He also offers tips on how to overcome this and set goals that have purpose and drive, ultimately leading to success. Setting meaningful goals and avoiding impulsive decisions
Aligning dreams with core values and meaning
Finding a meaningful dream with equal fear and excitement
Episode Highlights:
[02:08] Setting Meaningful Goals and Avoiding Impulsive Decisions
Adam discusses how to set meaningful goals and avoid impulsive decisions when making New Year's resolutions. He says goals should be big, brave, and clear (BBC goals).
The three elements of a Big, Brave, Clear (BBC) Dream are:
It’s grounded in your core values.
It has a profound meaning to you.
It has equal measure of fear and excitement.
Impulsive goals lack purpose, meaning, and clear definition of success. Most people give up on New Year's resolutions because their goals are empty and void of meaning. By taking the time to thoughtfully define goals in line with your values that challenge you and drive you forward, you can avoid impulsive decisions and set yourself up for long-term success and growth.
[07:40] Aligning Dreams with Core Value and Meaning
The first part of a big, brave, clear (BBC) dream is that it must be grounded in your core values. Your core values are what drive you, so if your dream is not aligned with your values, you may give up on it. The second part is that the dream must have an empowering and powerful meaning to you personally. It doesn't need to mean anything to others, but finding meaning is important because it can help you live through challenges. When you attach meaning to a dream, it becomes a "must" rather than just a "want." Aligning dreams with values and giving them personal meaning makes the goals more empowering and likely to stick with you long-term.
[11:36] Finding a Meaningful Dream with Equal Fear and Excitement
Adam says the third part of a big, brave, clear (BBC) dream is that it must invoke an equal measure of fear and excitement. He calls this the "oh shit" factor. When considering a dream, there should be an initial moment when you feel both fear and excitement - an "oh shit" response. Either the excitement will drive you forward to pursue it, or the fear will hold you back. But both emotions indicate you are challenging yourself to grow. He gives his own example of initially feeling fear about doing an Ironman triathlon, but the second time considering it, letting both the fear and excitement empower him to pursue it. Finding a dream that elicits this "oh shit" response means it will push you outside your comfort zone and lead to growth, fulfillment and consistency in achieving the goal.
