Resilience With Dr Kevin J Payne

Listen Later

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Dr Kevin J Payne, founder of Your Life Lived Well, a tech entrepreneur and former professor. Everything he’s done is about using social and behavioural science to help people improve their quality of life. In his case, he had his life turned upside down by chronic illness, having lived with multiple sclerosis and supported his wife who had advanced cancer.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We are not just bodies and our medical challenges don’t just have medical solutions, we are brains in bodies doing behaviours within the context of relationships and environments. We have all of these other things that are more directly within our influence – not easy, mind you – changing mindsets, relationships and environment are not easy, but they are more possible sometimes than changing a medical condition.
  • If we really want to change ourselves and the world, we’ve got to have the honesty and the humility to acknowledge the way we actually are. That’s where real change begins, not where we want to be or how we would like to believe we are, but how we actually are. That idea is really attractive to me and how I got into social psychology.
  • It’s such a remarkable thing that humans have created a world that allows some of us to get really deep and geeky into the things that we’re really interested in and the areas that we want to contribute to. The division of labour is such a remarkable invention, and I felt really privileged to have had that opportunity. The privilege incurs a kind of responsibility to do something meaningful out of it. For me, it was this wonderful idea that we can know one another better and that there’s this great conversation that has been going for thousands of years where we are each trying to make serious contributions to it and through our conversation help improve the quality of life we experience
  • Mindset is crucial, but it’s only the gateway. People get caught up in the idea that “you can if you think you can, you’ve got to be positive”. No. Sometimes you think you can and you still get smacked down. What is important is: If you think you can’t you likely won’t. You’ve got to craft a mindset that is open enough to try, to be resilient, to be creative, you’ve got to keep trying, accept failure and learn from it and then you’ve got to try the new thing.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Right now in the U.S., over half of Americans now live with a chronic illness. In Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world, you guys aren’t far behind.’
‘I became interested in the question: How can we live a good life when we are faced with something that is intrinsically bad that we can never get away from? In my case multiple sclerosis.’
‘The thing I fear most is in my body with me.’
‘You will never have arrived, you’re always on the journey.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Dr Kevin J Payne is a social psychologist and entrepreneur, author, podcast host, speaker, teacher, and frequent guest interview or panellist. He shares the results of his extensive research concerning how to live a quality life with chronic distress, pain, and illness. He also shares his personal exploits as a collector of experiences — even while battling Multiple Sclerosis for decades. Life is too remarkable to sit on the side-lines, even when we’ve got to get more creative about how we get in the game!

He was born and raised in the Kansas City Metro area. He can’t have too many books, is a lifelong tech geek, loves collecting new experiences, is devoted to his animals, pretty fond of his kids, and sometimes appears as a pirate.

He also never misses a chance to jump from a perfectly good aeroplane.

ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
