Listen Later

Hello Baltimore, this is Morgan Riley with your local news update for Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025.

Word on the streets of Baltimore is that our school system is facing serious legal challenges. Three women have filed a lawsuit against Baltimore's public school system, alleging they were sexually abused by a special education teacher decades ago. This troubling case highlights ongoing concerns about student safety in our educational institutions.

In more uplifting news, Baltimore is preparing for a historic celebration. The annual Pride Festival returns this weekend, marking an incredible 50 years since Pride was first born in Baltimore. Back in 1975, a small peaceful protest took place against the backdrop of the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon, helping to galvanize the movement for gay rights. Now, this celebration has evolved into a citywide event drawing more than 100,000 attendees.

The festival runs from June 8th through 15th with this year's theme being "50 Shades of Pride" in tribute to our city's LGBTQ+ history. Events kick off with happy hours, dance parties, and open mics throughout the week, followed by the Twilight on the Terrace fundraising gala at Gertrude's Chesapeake Kitchen. Saturday brings the High Heeled Race in the morning, the Pride Parade starting at noon at North Avenue and Charles Street, and culminates with a Block Party at Wyman Park Dell.

In education achievements, ten Maryland public high school students have been named semifinalists in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, showcasing the exceptional talent in our local schools.

On the public safety front, Baltimore Police responded to a call about an armed person in the 3000 block of Westfield Avenue early Sunday morning at approximately 2:04 a.m. Details are still developing on this situation.

Looking at our forecast, we're expecting a partly cloudy day with temperatures reaching the mid-70s, perfect weather to enjoy some of our city's outdoor spaces.

As we reflect on these stories, I'm reminded of how Baltimore continues to be a city of resilience, celebration, and progress, even as we face ongoing challenges.
