Good morning, Baltimore. I’m Morgan Riley, and you’re tuned into your daily Baltimore news update. Word on the streets of Baltimore is that there's a lot to unpack today, so let’s dive in.
First, a sobering update from the city's recent crime reports. Baltimore recorded several violent incidents over the past few days. On April 6th, Hakeen English, 35, tragically lost his life to gun violence in the 1600 block of Cliftview Avenue. Just a day later, a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg near Aisquith Street, and thankfully, he is recovering after being hospitalized. While these stories weigh heavily, it's worth noting that the city has seen a drop in homicides compared to past years. In 2024, Baltimore ended the year with 201 homicides, down significantly from 261 in 2023. The work to reduce violence continues, but the numbers hint at progress.
On a lighter note, there's a heartwarming spotlight on Coach Ramona Riley-Bozier, a true legend at Morgan State University. As she celebrates her 34th season coaching the Lady Bears volleyball program, Coach Riley-Bozier continues to inspire both on and off the court. Not only is she the winningest coach in school history, but her contributions stretch back to her days as a student-athlete, where she became a three-time All-American in track and field. Her legacy is a testament to hard work and perseverance, embodying the spirit of Baltimore.
Moving to the weather, we’re in for a classic spring week. Expect a mix of sunshine and mild temperatures peaking in the upper 60s. It's the perfect time to get outside and enjoy our beautiful city parks. Speaking of getting out and about, don’t miss the upcoming Baltimore Old Time Music Festival at the Baltimore Museum of Industry on April 18th and 19th. This two-day event brings together roots musicians from across the country to celebrate the city’s Americana past and present. Whether you’re a history buff or a music lover, it’s one you won’t want to miss.
Before we wrap up, I’d like to leave you with a thought. Coach Riley-Bozier’s enduring dedication and Baltimore's ongoing efforts to improve safety remind us that resilience is at the core of this city. We’ve faced challenges before, and through community and determination, we continue to rise together.
