11:1-18

For

Luke, the movement of the gospel toward the Gentiles is a

significant event and so he takes time to show that it is not only

authorized by the Jerusalem church, but by God himself. Our passage

today records Peter's defense, before the Jerusalem church, for the

baptism of Cornelius and his family.

Cornelius was a roman

centurion who believed in the God of Israel. The news of the Messiah

made him welcome the message Peter proclaimed. Cornelius became the

first Gentile to be baptized with his family and admitted into the

Church.
