In Matthew 5, Jesus elevates our standard for how to relate with one another. During his time, he elevates people's understanding from "an eye for an eye" view of enacting justice to instead overcome evil with good. Because God has forgiven us of much, we ought to forgive others and even respond to the evil done to us with good.
