In this episode of Will Bangura’s Dog Training Today, dog behaviorist Will Bangura explains resource guarding directed toward a pet parent, family member, couch, bed, lap, or preferred person.
Many pet parents describe this behavior as jealousy, loyalty, or protectiveness. However, when a dog stiffens, blocks, growls, snaps, lunges, or bites when another dog, spouse, child, visitor, or family member approaches, the behavior may be better understood as resource guarding.
Topics covered include:
• What it means when a dog guards a pet parent
• Why dogs may guard access to people, furniture, beds, couches, or resting spaces
• How fear, insecurity, anxiety, conflict, or perceived loss can drive guarding behavior
• Early body language signs pet parents often miss
• Why respecting a dog’s boundaries helps prevent escalation
• Why growling should not be punished
• Why aggression is not simply an obedience problem
• The difference between obedience training and behavior modification
• How management reduces risk while behavior change is underway
• Why counterconditioning and desensitization matter
• How to help dogs feel safer when people or other dogs approach valued resources
Will also explains why dogs should not be forced to “work it out.” The goal is not forced sharing. The goal is safety, emotional change, predictable routines, and helping the dog learn that people and dogs approaching the pet parent are not a threat.

This episode is especially helpful for pet parents with dogs who guard people, growl when someone approaches the couch or bed, become tense around other dogs near a preferred person, or show aggression in multi-dog households.
