Movement elder and co-founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bernice Johnson Reagon, wrote: "You don't go into coalition because you like it. The only reason you would consider trying to team up with somebody who could possibly kill you is because that it is the only way you can figure that you can stay alive."

If you're working across differences, grappling with conflict in your coalition work, or just want to become as effective as you can possibly be in building solutions to complex challenges for a community you love, this conversation is for you.

In this episode, I'm joined by multidisciplinary artist and EFT tapping practitioner Bianca Gabrielle Wilson, creator of The Everyday Artist, the virtual space where I've recorded this very podcast many times. We talk about what it means to expand our definition of creativity beyond the shoulds and supposed-to's, and why you can't force your nervous system to create when it doesn't feel safe. Bianca shares how tapping helps with the exhaustion, procrastination, and perfectionism that so often block us, and why being resourced is essential if we want to create something truly new in the world.

We also get into her two big creative projects right now: her short film Last Man Standing, born from a truly astounding dating story you'll have to hear for yourself, and The Clovers, the all-Black women's beach volleyball team she built when the team she was looking for didn't exist yet. Both are beautiful examples of collective creativity and shared leadership, and of what becomes possible when you treat everyone as a leader.

I'm starting a new interim executive director role, and in this episode I share the news and the full-circle moment it represents. My entry point into nonprofit work was nearly three decades ago as a hotline and shelter volunteer at the Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence in Corvallis, Oregon. Now I'm stepping in to support the WomenShelter of Long Beach as they approach their 50th anniversary. I also share a poem called All In, woven from what folks at La La La Lunch said karaoke and leadership have in common, and I dig into one of my favorite questions: What do you mean by that? It's a powerful tool for seeking to understand, deepening someone's own clarity, and even responding to passive-aggressive jokes. Plus a plug for the documentary American Agitators. A heads-up that I touch lightly on themes related to sexual violence and domestic violence in this episode, though I don't go into depth.

This episode is all about taking the long view. I had two coaching sessions early in June that both circled around this theme, and it's been something I've kept coming back to ever since. I share a situation where getting coached on what taking the long view of the relationship could look like completely shifted how I was holding it. I also talk about the fear that comes up around putting myself and my offers more visibly out into the world, and what it looked like to get coached on that from the perspective of my 93- or 97-year-old self (she's a little sassy, by the way).

Then I get into a June recap. I'm sharing an update on my inner wise self love note challenge, some honest reflections about where I'm at with my body and starting hormone replacement therapy, and a look ahead to my business retreat and the La La La Lunch karaoke event I'm hosting for nonprofit and social impact parent-leaders in the Long Beach area. I didn't always love karaoke. I used to think you had to be good at it. In this episode, I'm taking you through how that changed: sushi-bar karaoke nights in my early L.A. days, a surprise Mack the Knife from a fellow union leader, a conga line on Broadway that ended in my karaoke home, and yes, singing very pregnant trying to convince my breech daughter to flip. When does life get colorful? According to Eydie Pasicel, it's when we stop living in the black and white, when we get to know our parts, understand our chart, and stop letting our unconscious run the show.
