SEGMENT I | Respect, Acceptance and Love For Muslims In Ramadan
[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.
[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!
[Syazana] You are listening to the sixteenth episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo: Azfar and Azimah.
What did we talk about in segment one last week?
[Azimah] We talked about what made us happy and I mentioned about Ramadan and fasting for Muslims like us.
[Syazana] Great recall, Azimah! We also mentioned two more ways that you can do to show you care for special needs communities in this month of April (such as buying goods and services from organizations and businesses owned or run by special needs communities as well as donating money, time and expertise to organizations, businesses or charity that support special needs communities).
Today we’ll highlight another organization in New York that provides services for special needs communities: Saratoga Bridges located in our Village of Ballston Spa.
[Azimah] It’s in Ballston Spa? Have we been there before?
[Syazana] Yes! If I recall correctly, you attended one of their programs during the school mid winter recess in 2016. Azfar was also there but he was there as a volunteer.
[Azimah] Oh! I see!
[Syazana] We had taken some photos on those days you were there but it’s been like five years so I’ll need to retrieve them when I have a little more free time.
[Azfar] What services do they offer?
Some of the services they provide are
[Azimah] Wow! Should we sign up for some programs again?
[Syazana] Sure! I’d love you to learn decision making and problem solving skills at the (Media & Computer Training) Center. Those are useful life skills.
[Azimah] How can people support Saratoga Bridges?
[Syazana] You can give a donation to Saratoga Bridges online through its website at
https://www.saratogabridges.org then click on “Ways to give” button.
Next, we had also promised last week that we’ll answer more questions on Ramadan. Are you ready?
[Azimah, Azfar] Yeah!!! Yup! Ready!
[Syazana] Muslims fast from daybreak to dusk in Ramadan without drinking even a sip of water! How can you survive? Will you die of dehydration?
[Azfar] Azimah and I are trained to fast from daybreak till dusk since we were five years old. Of course we didn’t fast for full days yet, only half days till the afternoon prayer, Dhuhr. Over the weeks, we progressed to full days. So now it’s quite easy for us to go without food or water for many hours.
Our first Ramadan in New York was during the hot summer in 2015. That was quite challenging at first because we had to fast for more than twelve hours! It was about 17 hours!
[Syazana] Oh yeah! It was challenging for all four of us! I could remember Azimah opening the refrigerator right after she came back from school one day.
[Azimah] Ha! Ha! Yeah! I don’t do that anymore! I’m stronger now.
[Syazana] Good!
[Azimah] Are we going to share any good feedback from our listeners today?
[Syazana] No, we’re not sharing any feedback today because last week, we had shared three feedback and all were from Azimah’s former teacher, Mrs. Sue Bernd. Today, we’ll reveal why Azimah finds Mrs. Bernd truly amazing!
[Azimah] Okay! In 2018, I was in sixth grade, in middle school. A few weeks before Ramadan, Mrs. Bernd asked my mom if I was thinking of… putting on the hijab!
[Syazana] That came as a surprise because coincidentally, Azimah had been thinking about wearing the hijab for over six months. While we were on a vacation in Malaysia during summer recess in 2017, we bought several pieces of the hijab to prepare for the day Azimah would decide to wear the hijab.
[Azimah] Yeah! I was worried about one thing: Looking different from my friends. The hijab is a piece of cloth that Muslim girls wear to cover their head. It’s like a hat or a poncho.
[Syazana] Being the attentive and caring teacher, she had noticed that during the class weekly weekend share sessions, Azimah loved to talk about the weekend Islamic school that she attended and family outings. In all of those photos, Azimah had put on her hijab.
So when I told Mrs. Bernd “Yes!” Azimah wants to wear the hijab in school but wasn’t fully ready, she assured me that Azimah should be proud of her Muslim identity and go for it! So on the first day of Ramadan that year, Azimah started wearing hijab in school!
[Azimah] Woohoo! My friends said that I looked good in the pretty hijab and that made me happy!
[Syazana] What a beautiful story of respect, acceptance and love showed by Mrs. Bernd! Thank you, Mrs. Bernd and Azimah’s wonderful classmates too. That’s it for segment one today!
[Azimah] Stay tuned to the next episode…
[Azfar] And listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, love, integrity and social responsibility.

SEGMENT II | Tips on Productivity and Intellectual Wellness For Teens III and Introduction To Ivy Ngeow’s book, Mid Century Modern: 15 Interior Design Ideas
Coming up next…
In the second segment of the podcast, we’ll learn about productivity and the nine dimensions of wellness—physical, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, intellectual, mental, occupational and financial wellness—so we can survive and thrive in this unpredictable world.
[Syazana] Once upon a spring, in the village of Ballston Spa, New York, there lived two high school Muslim Asian teenagers, Azfar and Azimah, and their loving parents. Every week, they would drop by at a nearby store to check their business mailbox...
[Two videos of Tilly, the store owner’s cat.]
[Azimah] Awww! I love meeting, Tilly, the celebrity cat. She’s so cute and fluffy with big brown eyes!
[Syazana] Oh yeah! We love it when Tilly shows off her skills at catching her toys!
[Azimah] Azfar and I love to play with cats. We’ll sometimes join mom to collect her business mails nearby. That’s where we get to meet and play with Tilly!
[Syazana] Tilly is the store owner’s cat. She’s a celebrity cat because sometimes people come to the store just to see Tilly!
[Azfar] Yup! I know
[Syazana] Great! In segment two last week, we gave more tips for teens to prepare for tests or exams such as switching your brain from “Focused Mode” to “Diffuse Mode” regularly, applying the Pomodoro technique and boosting your reading power with Active Recall. Did you remember all those tips?
[Azfar] Yeah! I remember.
[Syazana] Today, we’ll add two more useful tips from the book “Learning How To Learn: How to Succeed In School Without Spending All Your Time Studying -- A Guide for Kids and Teens by Barbara Oakley (Ph.D), and Terrence Sejnowski (Ph.D) with Alistair McConville. At the end of this segment, we have a little surprise! So, stay tuned!
[Source: https://barbaraoakley.com/books/learning-how-to-learn.]
Now let’s get back to the study tips for teens to boost productivity and intellectual wellness.
[Azimah] What is the first tip today?
[Syazana] To boost your learning, use funny pictures and metaphors. What is a metaphor? According to Cambridge dictionary online at
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/metaphor
A metaphor is an expression, often found in literature, that describes a person or object by referring to something that is considered to have similar characteristics to that person or object. For example:
"The mind is an ocean" and "the city is a jungle".
[Azimah] What is the second tip today?
[Syazana] Test yourself all the time. You can make flashcards or create mini tests to help you recall the material you studied. You might find something confusing as you test yourself so clear up those points of confusion. Get help from your teacher or trusted friends. Don’t let your ego stop you from asking for help when you really need it. Got it?
[Azimah] Yeah! Sort of!
[Syazana] For more information on other books by Dr. Barbara Oakley, visit her website at https://barbaraoakley.com.
If you need some motivation, you might want to check out the show notes for information on Dr. Oakley’s TEDx Talk video on Learning How To Learn on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O96fE1E-rf8&ab_channel=TEDxTalks
Speaking of YouTube, we’re happy to announce that we have launched our YouTube business channel, ASKtrioWello, with a video trailer on April 22nd in conjunction with Earth Day.
Next, it’s time to bring on the surprise we’ve been talking about!
But first let me ask you: Do you love rich and vibrant timeless design? Are you on a budget and planning a project based on this hot trend? Are you excited to find out how to create the look for your home, hotel or motel?
Today, we’d like to highlight the latest book by my dear friend, an award winning author and architect, Ivy Ngeow from London, U.K.
Let’s welcome our special guest, Ivy Ngeow!
[Ivy] Thank you! It’s a short book, it’s 68 pages. It’s called Mid Century Modern: 15 Interior Design Ideas” published by Leopard Print.
[Syazana] You’ve written many books including novels and cookbooks. Tell us, Ivy: Why did you write this book?
[Ivy] This book...it’s the first time I’m bringing together my two passions which is in architecture, design and writing. I found that there were very few books for lay people or beginners at home decorating which was quick and easy. Most books were fairly overwhelming and daunting and I wanted to provide a really good overview of the ideas behind modernism and the way we live today.
So this book is about the rich and vibrant, timeless design of the mid century period. And it’s for anybody who’s on a budget and planning a project. It’s not just for the home. The design principles are able to be practiced on a home, hotel or a motel. This book is actually based on my 25 years of experience in architecture and interior design. I was a columnist for London’s Wimbledon magazine for seven years writing about architecture and interior design ("interiorists"). I found that people were very interested in construction and design but they didn’t know where to begin. I’ve also drawn on my international experience. I’ve worked on projects in New York and London. I’ve done vacay homes in the Hamptons. I’ve done Caribbean resorts, golf resorts, and I’ve also worked on two UNESCO world heritage sites: Havana and Penang (Malaysia).
There are some quick hot tips in every single chapter which will help the starter designer to ramp up any design at home to a professional level. And these are the interior design secrets that I’ll be sharing in the book. It’s a concise style guide. This book will teach you how to save time and money and research to create rooms of maximum impact with minimum fuss using the 15 easy-to-read (follow) illustrated ideas. There are beautiful photographs in every single chapter. So this lifestyle handbook is perfect for amateurs, designers, enthusiasts or modernists.
[Syazana] Where can you buy the book? How much is the book?
[Ivy] It’s available on all major retailers like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple and Google. On Kindle, it will be USD$5.99 and in paperback, it’s USD$13.99.
[Syazana] Wow! I’m so excited to read the book! For the next few weeks, we’ll also have Ivy on the show to discuss more on occupational and intellectual wellness as she talks about how she made her career choices.
[Azimah] Stay tuned to the next episode. Bye!
