Resurrection Day is Celebration Day

(Hebrews 12:2 NIV)

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God

(Ephesians 1:7 NIV)

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.

(John 20:1-2 NIV)

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. (2) So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

(John 20:14-16 NIV)

At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. (15) He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” (16) Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” (20)  After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord."

Joy to the World

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people."

Joy to the Cities

So there was great joy in that city.

Joy to You and I

(Psalm 126:1-3 NIV)

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. (2) Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The Lord has done great things for them.” (3) The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.

Questions:

• Why should we fix our eyes on Jesus, as Hebrews 12:2 says?
• Ephesians 1:7 talks about redemption and forgiveness through Jesus. How can knowing you are forgiven change the way you live and interact with others?
• Mary didn’t recognize Jesus at first (John 20:14-16). Do you recognize Jesus working in your life? 
• What did Jesus bring to his disciples when He appeared to them? (John 20:19-20). How can you share this peace and joy with others in our daily lives?
• Resurrection Day is a celebration of victory over sin and death. How do people know that God has done great things for them? How can you guard this victory?
