Listen Later

Welcome back to Retail Reflections! This week, we’re covering the biggest headlines shaping the industry right now from The Works stepping away from e-commerce to double down on physical retail, and Crocs’ continued UK and global expansion, to Oxfam’s vintage concept store launch and Sephora’s long-awaited move into Scotland. We also dive into ASOS’ profit rebound and what’s driving it, Decathlon’s investment in warehouse automation, and how rising costs and global uncertainty are starting to impact pricing strategies. Plus, Coca-Cola’s repositioning play and Pinterest’s move into shoppable entertainment.

The Works - Shut down its e-commerce site with immediate effect to focus entirely on its 500 physical stores. 90% of sales already came from stores since launching online in 2012. Repositioning around "affordable, screen-free activities for the whole family."

Crocs  -Opening two new UK stores in April: Caledonia Park (Scotland) and Westfield Stratford. Stores will feature personalization with charms. Internationally, Crocs plans 200–250 new door openings, with their international business on track to overtake the US.

Oxfam - Launching "Oxfam Vintage," a dedicated pre-loved fashion store in Manchester's Northern Quarter (March 27). The store design is centered on circularity (e.g., lighting made from recycled plastic) and they ran a citywide treasure hunt to promote the opening.

Price hikes? Next expects £15M in added costs over three months and plans to pass higher prices to consumers if the conflict continues. BRC reports UK consumer confidence has collapsed, with 2 out of 3 consumers expecting the economy to worsen. Food and drink prices are already rising, with household bills potentially hitting +8% by June (£150 extra per household).

Pinterest  - Launched a shoppable six-part streaming series called "Bring My Pinterest to Life" on the Roku Channel, featuring entertainment-led content where people shop their Pinterest boards with partners like Wayfair.

Tune in next week for more retail news and reflections!
