Rethink Your EV Charging Setup to Save Money and Hassle

Listen Later

Welcome to Tech Minute. Today we’re talking about EV charging circuits—and why you probably don’t need that massive 50-amp outlet your electrician suggests. As Technology Connections points out, “the ‘standard’ car charger is usually overkill—but your electrician might not know that.” Most electric vehicles draw no more than 32 amps on a 240-volt circuit, delivering about 7.7 kilowatts of power. Yet many installers default to a 50-amp breaker and heavy gauge cable, driving up costs and installation time. “Seriously, make your life easier and don’t go overboard for no reason,” our host reminds us. Instead, a 40-amp breaker with 10-gauge wire—or even a simple NEMA 6-20 outlet—is often more than enough for everyday charging. You’ll still get a full overnight charge, save money on parts and labor, and meet all code requirements. Bottom line: size your circuit to your car’s real needs, not your electrician’s default. That’s your Tech Minute—thanks for listening!
