LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS
- People’s thoughts on success often comes from cultural norms. Rethinking success can keep us from becoming disappointed when what we attain (thinking it is success) is not what we expected.
- Resume virtues vs. Eulogy virtues: Resume virtues are the “merit badges” of life, while eulogy virtues are what people really recall about you and are worth your energy.
- Happiness is circumstantial and externally driven, while meaning is internally driven.
- Without a purpose beyond your circumstances, you will live in fear.
- It is important to know the story you were born into to make sure you are living your own rather than someone else’s.
- The greatest regret of most people about to die is that they did not take more risk.
- Not forgiving is like taking poison. Let go so that you do not get eaten up.
- Reject the mythology of balance and embrace the idea of seasons.
- Create space to think about your life and why you are pursuing your goals. Many things people do are not thoughtful.
- Write 2-3 things you are grateful for every day.
- The best thing you can do for those around you is to become the best version of yourself.
QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION
- What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Taking a stand in college that cost something in the moment.
- Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Grounded, daring, and imaginative.
- What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? What is the right thing to do in this circumstance?
- What book would you recommend to leaders? Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
- If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Learn to be quiet, meditate, and create safe space where you can stop the noise and be still.
- As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why not?” because invites larger conversation and imagination.
