Let's Save The Governor-General!

Retrospecive: The Port Arthur Massacre

Listen Later

**CONTENT WARNING**

28th April 1996 sees the beginning one of the darkest incidents in Australian history - Martin Bryant, in possession of a number of firearms, fatally shoots 35 people and wounds 23 in and around the historic tourist attraction, Port Arthur, about an hour away from Hobart in Tasmania's far south-east, with the perpetrator being captured the next day, April 29th, after a shootout with police.

Martin Bryant is tried, pleads guilty and is sentenced to 35 consecutive life sentences in Hobart's Risdon Prison – basically a death sentence without the execution.

Join Phoebe, Clancy and Damo as they discuss the precedents, the lead-up, the events and the aftermath.
