Both his parents had become religious later in life (chozrim b'teshuva/baalei teshuva) - his father a helicopter pilot Vietnam vet, his mother an Iraqi-Indian born Jew who grew up in London after her family emigrated there from Bombay in the 1950s. Reuven's Jewish journey involved many soul searching twists and turns that took him deep into the ultra Orthodox system as a child and teenager, then to rejecting this religious way of life, into the IDF and then back to the Torah path.
