Sermon Outline:
7And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in, you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination. Jeremiah 2:7 (ESV)
30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Sin's effect: Sin GRIEVES the HEART of God.
21A voice on the bare heights is heard, the weeping and pleading of Israel's sons because they have perverted their way; they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22"Return, O faithless sons; I will heal your faithlessness." "Behold, we come to you, for you are the LORD our God. 23Truly the hills are a delusion, the orgies on the mountains. Truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24"But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God."
Sin's reality: Sin is a CHALLENGE to God's AUTHORITY.
1"If you return, O Israel, declares the LORD, to me you should return. If you remove your detestable things from my presence, and do not waver, 2and if you swear, 'As the LORD lives,' in truth, in justice, and in righteousness, then nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory." 3For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: "Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. 4Circumcise yourselves to the LORD; remove the foreskin of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds." Jeremiah 4:1-4 (ESV)
Even after understanding the seriousness of sin and experiencing its consequences, why is it hard to return to God?
22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
23Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
