Reviewing the Home Free LP – E123

Listen Later

We’ve got a review of the Home Free LP hot off the presses! Do any of these names ring a bell? Adrian Quesada of Black Pumas. Mix Master Mike and Money Mark of Beastie Boys. Akil the MC of Jurassic 5. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. Sabrina Ellis of A Giant Dog. Slimkid3 of The Pharcyde. Stephanie Hunt of Buffalo Hunt.

The list goes on and on, and they all contribute to a soundtrack that elevates a movie with a mission. Writer Lenny Barszap and director Aaron Brown put together a fantastic movie about college, coming of age, and homelessness. Their old college friend, Adrian Quesada, helped put together a masterful mix of musicians to make something really special.

Resident musician and co-host Kevin Bessey sits down with Tristan to discuss some of the tracks on the album, what stuck out, and the lessons he took away from the Home Free LP original soundtrack. We spliced in bits of the songs we discussed so listeners get a little taste of the tracks.

We hope you enjoy today’s episode, and we’ll have our interview with Lenny and Aaron dropping in the next couple months as well, so keep an eye out for that.

Enjoy!

About the Home Free Original Soundtrack:

The stacked 28-track, 90s-inspired mixtape delivers original music produced by Quesada. It spins like a home-dubbed mixtape: a sequence embracing grooved-out jazz-funk instrumentals, eclectic alternative pop, heavy-lidded stoner raps, and zero gravity singer-songwriter meditations. Featuring a host of musical legends definitive to the film’s era, this soundtrack does something truly unique in its matchmaking of these heavy hitters on the tracks in unexpected ways. What you get is a true mixtape of styles, with the throughline of Quesada’s vision and musical prowess that imbues the album with style and cohesion.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and delayed the making of the film and Quesada’s Black Pumas tour at the time, Barszap and Brown gave him the script and entrusted him to produce the soundtrack. He completed about 80% of it before the film was even made – a very cool and unique process for all involved. The result was a very collaborative, special project in which the soundtrack and film each influenced the completion of the other.

About the Film

Home Free is based on the real-life experience of Onion Creek Productions founder and director/producer Aaron Brown and writer/producer Lenny Barszap of Entertaining Entertainment. In 1997, as sophomores at the University of Texas at Austin, Brown and Barszap invited an unhoused philosophy professor to crash on their porch – where they hosted several parties, many of which their friend and fellow UT Austin student at the time, Adrian Quesada, also attended. Twenty-five years later, this became the premise for the film Home Free, which explores profound themes of friendship, personal growth, and social impact through the lens of comedy (think Dazed & Confused meets Superbad).

Home Free aims to put a spotlight on the homelessness crisis and organizations like The Other Ones Foundation (TOOF), Caritas and other housing nonprofits in Austin that are actively working to rewrite the narrative around our unhoused neighbors and transition them off of the streets – with hopes of inspiring this kind of format across the country.
