Matthew 24 warns that the return of Jesus Christ will be sudden and unexpected. Two people may be working side by side, yet one will be taken and the other left. This separation will not be determined by position, reputation, family background, or outward appearance. Acts 10:34–35 declares that God is no respecter of persons, but accepts those who fear Him and walk in righteousness. Matthew 16:13–22 shows that it is also possible to recognize who Jesus is while still resisting what He says. Peter correctly confessed Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” but shortly afterward opposed the Lord’s teaching concerning the cross. Therefore, watching means more than expecting Christ’s return. It means knowing who Jesus is, receiving His Word without resistance, submitting to His will, and living every day prepared to meet Him. The command is urgent: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

Jesus teaches that what a person focuses on will influence the direction of the entire life. A single eye represents a heart that is fully focused on God, while an evil eye represents divided desires, selfishness, and spiritual distraction. When the heart is centered on Christ, the life is filled with spiritual light, but when attention is controlled by sin and worldly desires, darkness begins to shape a person’s thoughts, choices, and actions. The lesson is to guard what enters the heart and remain completely devoted to God.
