Welcome back to Cracking the Copyright! Our aim is to give an inside look into the conversations that inspire the songs we write. We dive deep into an artist’s life, state of mind, feelings and any problems they are facing. The goal is to craft a song from something real and meaningful in the hopes that people can connect and relate to it.
In this episode we are joined by Rex, a Barbadian songwriter, artist and multi instrumentalist. At 16, he left school in Barbados to become a professional musician. With three of his friends, he formed the band Cover Drive, which was active from 2010-2018. Cover Drive scored three top tens on the UK official chart — including the #1 hit record, “Twilight." On the journey they earned platinum records, opened for Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson, and ultimately got dropped by their record label.
Rex’s journey back to the top is underway, and in this episode we discuss the lessons he’s learned from the first time and how he had to redefine to himself, what it means to be a musician. He has a very optimistic world view and his message comes through in his music.
