Here’s your Rey-Rey Is Fundamental podcast episode this week. Basketball, basketball, and more basketball!
Michael Sykes (The Second!) (@MikeDSykes), who writes at For The Win at USA Today and also writes a sneakers newsletter called The Kicks You Wear. We’re going into a new format here! Sort of…
THE MUSIC BEFORE THE MUSIC
I asked Mike how he got started. He mentioned his love of writing and, apparently, video game fanfics.
THE HOOPLA
We talked NBA and WNBA semifinals! We went over the Nuggets/Lakers and Heat/Celtics. Why the Nuggets in 7? Why did the Heat do so well this season? And maybe a Lakers/Celtics Finals might bring some sort of normalcy in this pandemic?
As for the WNBA semifinals, we went over the Seattle Storm’s depth, the growth of Napheesa Collier, the toughness of Alyssa Thomas, and the dominance of A’ja Wilson.
We ended up talking about how basketball is SO good right now and that a lot of media is doing a terrible job promoting the game that’s going on TODAY.
And somehow, we ended up talking about the officiating of the game. And Mike even took an officiating class. WHAT?!
THE POSTSCRIPT
We talked about his favorite basketball players, past and present. What is his guilty pleasure song? And why am I NOT the baddest Filipino he knows?!
Thank you for listening!
