Today’s reading is the book of first Peter, which was written by the apostle Peter to Gentile believers described as ‘strangers’ who were being persecuted. He writes to encourage them to endure the persecution and to live righteous, holy lives.
Chapter 1 opens with greetings to the believers scattered in different geographic regions. They are reminded of their inheritance in Christ and encouraged to persevere.
Chapter 2 speaks of the members as living stones being built into a spiritual house and describes them as ‘a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.’
Chapters 3 to 5 provide wisdom and guidance on how to navigate various relationships and interactions and a call to humility and submission to God.
