Calls to reignite the debate over whether genetically modified food should be allowed in New Zealand.

The outgoing Chief Science Advisor for the Prime Minister believes it's safe and worth discussing.

No genetically modified fresh produce or crops can be grown commercially in the country and any in processed foods must be approved by officials.

Massey University Food Science Professor Richard Archer told Mike Hosking we'll have to start using it in the future, so it's important to debate.

"Having the debate now and gradually realising that the safety fears are unfounded is an important point."
